The Queen’s Bath also known as Ulpange isn’t just a bath. It’s a portal to Sri Lanka’s royal past. Built in 1806 by King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha it served as the bathing pool for his queens. Its location on the edge of Kandy Lake south of the Temple of the Tooth Relic speaks volumes about its significance.

The original structure a stone-built marvel was an oblong octagon. An excavated central ledge encircled the pool. Pillars once supported a roof later concealed by British-era walls. Scholars believe the bathhouse was built around a natural spring hence its name Ulpange.

The British captured Kandy in 1815. They filled and cemented the pool transforming it into the ground floor of a library. In 1828 they added another story creating the United Service Library. Clever weren’t they? They retained the traditional Kandyan look.

The Cultural Triangle’s excavation in the 1980s revealed the octagonal pool. They meticulously uncovered the molded stone slabs and the hidden pillars. The Queen’s Bath was reborn.

Now you can almost picture the queens bathing here. Feel the cool water on your skin. Sense the quiet dignity of their ritual. The pool’s dimensions 19 meters long 9.4 meters wide and 3.45 meters deep attest to its royal grandeur. The intricate stonework bears witness to skilled craftsmanship.

The Queen’s Bath stands as a testament to Kandy’s rich heritage. Its restoration is a victory for preservation. It’s a place where history and beauty intertwine. It’s a treasure that continues to enchant visitors. It invites you to contemplate the lives of Sri Lanka’s queens. Their stories and those of Kandy itself are woven into the very stones.
