Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church stands tall a beacon of hope and devotion. Founded on July 1 1909 by Archbishop James E Quigley it opened its doors to a diverse community. Father Francis L Reynolds was appointed to establish the church. The vision wasn’t to create a church for a single ethnic group. Instead Queen of Angels was designed to be a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds. This inclusive spirit remains the church’s defining characteristic.

The initial church building a combination church school and convent was dedicated on June 28 1910. Its location was on the northwest corner of Western Avenue and Sunnyside Avenue. But the rapidly growing congregation soon outgrew this space. In 1926 the parish purchased land at the corner of Sunnyside and Claremont Avenues. This marked the beginning of an ambitious project a new grander church. However challenges arose. The soft soil proved difficult to work with resulting in a 14-year construction period. Finally the beautiful church we see today was completed in the spring of 1940. The dedication Mass took place on May 5 1940.

The early years reveal the church’s humble beginnings. In 1910 its total income was $10230 while expenditures reached $11000. The records tell a heartwarming story. 402 families totaling 1206 people were registered. There were 62 infant baptisms 12 adult baptisms and 25 converts. A small yet significant graduating class of 30 students marked the growth of its school. Today the church continues to thrive. Its combined parish and school budget is significantly larger. The registered parishioners number in the thousands. Queen of Angels has seen many changes. It has always been a place of comfort and worship for all.
