Behold the Queen Kapi’olani Statue. This bronze figure stands as a testament to a remarkable woman. Queen Kapi’olani wife of King David Kalakaua was a beloved philanthropist. She was known especially for her love of children.

This statue isn’t just a pretty face. It represents a legacy of compassion. Kapi’olani founded a maternity home in 1890. It was designed to help disadvantaged Hawaiians. Today many places bear her name. A park a hospital a boulevard and a community college all honor her memory.

She had two homes near this very spot. Her favorite overlooked the waterfront. This near-life-size statue is always adorned with fresh lei. A beautiful tribute to a queen who gave so much.

Her life wasn’t just about charity work. She was a queen after all. She was born Julia Napelakapuokakae Kapi’olani on December 31 1834 in Hilo Hawaii. She married first the High Chief Namakeha. He was much older than her. Her second marriage was to King Kalakaua. She became queen when he ascended the throne in 1874.

Queen Kapi’olani wasn’t afraid to travel. In 1887 she and Princess Liliuokalani journeyed to England. They celebrated Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Their travels took them across the United States and Europe. On their return Queen Kapi’olani even gifted the National Museum in Washington DC with a Hawaiian outrigger canoe.

She was a woman of firsts. The first Hawaiian queen to visit the United States. She made headlines when President and Mrs Grover Cleveland hosted her at the White House. She also visited many schools and hospitals in the United States. Newspapers across America covered her activities.

After King Kalakaua’s death in 1891 she retired to Waikiki. She died peacefully at her home Pualeilani in 1899. Her legacy lives on not only in this statue but in the many institutions named in her honor. She left a profound impact on Hawaii and beyond. Her kindness and generosity touched countless lives. This statue serves as a constant reminder of her grace and her enduring spirit.
