High in the Nuʻuanu Valley sits Queen Emma Summer Palace. It’s more than just a beautiful building. It’s a portal to the past, whispering stories of royalty, love, and loss. Queen Emma Summer Palace served as a sanctuary for Queen Emma of Hawaii, her husband King Kamehameha IV, and their son, Prince Albert Edward, from 1857 to 1885. Today, we stand before this historic landmark, a museum and tourist site located on Pali Highway, a short drive from downtown Honolulu. The palace isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to a remarkable queen.

Queen Emma Summer Palace wasn’t originally built in Hawaii. The home’s frame, crafted in Boston in 1848, journeyed thousands of miles around Cape Horn before arriving in Hawaiʻi. Imagine the logistical feat of transporting such a structure across the vast ocean! The home, initially featuring six rooms, a single story, and a charming porch with Doric columns, embodied the Greek Revival style. It was assembled on land purchased by John Lewis from the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Two years later, Keoni Ana, also known as John Young II, acquired the property at auction. He then gifted it to his niece, Queen Emma, in 1857. She expanded the home, adding the Edinburgh Room in 1869 to host the Duke of Edinburgh.

The palace grounds, spanning over two acres, are a vibrant tapestry of native Hawaiian plants. The Daughters of Hawaii maintain the estate and have lovingly restored the palace to its former glory. Inside, the palace walls hold echoes of Queen Emma’s life. The rooms display her personal belongings, including her baby grand piano and a sleigh bed. You can also see possessions of King Kamehameha IV and Prince Albert Edward, along with artifacts belonging to other Hawaiian royal families. In the Entrance Hall, feather standards (kāhili) stand proudly. The Parlor houses a koa dining table, imari porcelain, and three magnificent feather capes. The Edinburgh Room showcases royal gifts from Queen Victoria.

The Queen Emma Summer Palace isn’t just about lavish furnishings. It’s also a place of poignant memories. The palace houses Prince Albert Edward’s cradle and crib, a stark reminder of his short life. Among the treasures is a stereopticon gifted by Napoleon III during Queen Emma’s visit to France in 1865. The palace also boasts an impressive collection of portraits, featuring Hawaiian royalty and prominent figures of the era. After Queen Emma’s death in 1885, the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi reclaimed the estate. It later became a park and eventually, thanks to the Daughters of Hawaii, a museum. Queen Emma Summer Palace stands as a tribute to a queen who cherished her people and her home in the Nuʻuanu Valley. Her presence can still be felt within these walls, a gentle reminder of Hawaii’s royal past.
