Over a century ago, a desire sparked within a handful of Christians. They wanted to provide a Sunday School for kids in the Queen Anne community. That small gathering soon blossomed.
Welcome to Queen Anne Presbyterian Church. It stands as a testament to faith and community. It’s located at 414 West Howe Street on Queen Anne Hill.
Within a year of that first meeting, a church was founded. It consisted of several families. On July 28, 1905, the Third United Presbyterian Church was formally established. Reflecting its community, the name changed within a year. It became Queen Anne United Presbyterian Church.
The current sanctuary was built in 1907. For over 100 years, this red brick building has stood. It stands on the corner of Fifth and Howe. It has been witnessing to the love and hope of Jesus Christ.
Queen Anne Presbyterian Church has seen highs and lows. Its roots trace back to a Presbyterian denomination in Scotland. This group was known for its strong character. They were also committed to their beliefs. This strength fueled growth and outreach for the first 50 years. By the late 1950s, membership exceeded 250 people. The church was packed. There were two services each Sunday morning. Classes and activities filled the week. An additional building accommodated this growth.
In 1958, a merger occurred. The United Presbyterian Church of North America joined the larger Presbyterian denomination in the U.S. Some members of Queen Anne Presbyterian Church disagreed with the merger. In 1964, about half the congregation broke away. They started their own church. This split took a lot of steam out of the engine for those who remained. By the mid-1970s, things looked bleak from the outside.
But a committed core of believers remained steadfast. They believed God wasn’t done with their witness on top of the hill. Through prayer, hard work, and guidance from Rev. Henry Fawcett, things improved. Since the late 1970s, the congregation has grown. It has grown in size, depth, and service.
Now in its second century, Queen Anne Presbyterian Church continues its vision. It believes God will continue to work in and through them. The church is a Christian community of openness. It embraces inclusiveness and thoughtfulness. It welcomes all races and genders. It welcomes all ethnicities, orientations, body types, and abilities. Theological challenges are explored. Traditional services are offered with progressive theology. The church seeks to connect with God, neighbors, and one another in Christ.
Queen Anne Presbyterian Church gathers for worship on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. They meet in person and offer an online option. Coffee and conversation follow the service. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month.
