Look closely at the Queckbrunnen. This isn’t just any old fountain. It’s a living legend a whisper of Dresden’s past. For centuries the Queckbrunnen has stood witness to the city’s evolution. It’s one of Dresden’s oldest fountains first mentioned in 1461. Originally located near the Wilsdruffer Tor gate it served the city’s tanners. Its name Queckbrunnen possibly derives from the Middle High German word “quec” meaning lively or fresh.

The Queckbrunnen’s story is intertwined with local legends. One speaks of a stork delivering babies from the fountain’s waters. Another claims its water granted fertility to barren women. These legends were so powerful that in 1512 Bishop Johann von Saalhausen authorized construction of a pilgrimage chapel Our Lady of Queckborn.

The chapel attracted many pilgrims. It also caused economic conflict with the Dresden Kreuzkirche church. The Kreuzkirche’s income suffered because pilgrims donated to the Queckborn chapel instead. This led to the chapel’s closure in 1521 by Pope Leo X. The Queckbrunnen’s water then returned to serving the locals.

The Queckbrunnen’s current design is quite distinct. It features a striking sandstone fountain house a 4.5 meter tall structure. The distinctive stork on top holding bundles of babies is a modern addition. The original stork was lost during the Great Northern War. A new one was placed in 1734 then replaced again in 1968 by Alfred Hörnig after World War II damage. The front displays the Dresden coat of arms above an iron spout. A curved metal handle on the side was once used to draw water.

The Queckbrunnen has seen many changes and renovations in 1514 1745 1783 1824 and 1977. It was even moved to its present location in 1965.

Today the Queckbrunnen remains a Dresden landmark. Its unique design and captivating history make it a true gem. It is a symbol of Dresden’s rich history blending legend with practicality. So next time you see it remember the stories it holds the hopes and beliefs of centuries past. The Queckbrunnen stands as a testament to the enduring power of legends and the city’s vibrant spirit.
