“A dumping ground?” Yes, that’s one way to describe Quebrada Rumihuaycu today. But let’s delve deeper into the story of this ravine in northern Quito.

Quebrada Rumihuaycu is located in the África Mía neighborhood. Sadly it has become a hotspot for unsanitary conditions and crime. Locals are very worried.

Marcia Borja has lived here for over 20 years. She says people find ways to dump garbage at night or early morning even though much of the ravine is fenced off.

If you look around you will see bottles and plastic bags. Construction debris litters the Quebrada Rumihuaycu plus tires and sacks of garbage are strewn everywhere.

Rodents thrive on this waste becoming a nuisance in nearby homes. Nubia López lives right next to Quebrada Rumihuaycu. Rats invade her house constantly. Her husband has to put out poison daily. She worries about her pets getting into the poison.

All the neighbors share her concern. They are asking the authorities to step in and clean up the Quebrada Rumihuaycu.

Marco Tello points out this area is a dry forest. The constant dumping is hurting it. The land is eroding. He fears the ravine will collapse and damage Segundo Arauz Street.

Quebradas like Quebrada Rumihuaycu are susceptible to pollution. Of Quito’s 182 ravines this one has become a garbage dump. This situation impacts both the environment and the community. It shows how important it is to care for our natural spaces and keep them clean.

The story of Quebrada Rumihuaycu is not unique. Many communities face similar problems. The challenge lies in finding solutions that protect these vital ecosystems and ensure a healthy environment for everyone.
