Slithering down the slopes of Quito, the Quebrada Garrochal isn’t just a ravine. It’s a story etched in the city’s heart. The Quebrada Garrochal whispers tales of both nature’s fury and community resilience. This ravine, a natural waterway, has shaped the lives of those who dwell along its banks. One such story unfolds in the neighborhood of Garrochal, where the Quebrada Capulí, a tributary of the Quebrada Garrochal, flows. In 2008, tragedy struck when the old Capulí collector became clogged. Following a torrential downpour, the Quebrada Garrochal overflowed, sending a surge of mud and debris into the homes along the Capulí. Thirty families were impacted by the flood. Some lost everything. Hernán Flores, a 25-year resident, found his kitchen appliances and furniture scattered across his patio. The waterline on his walls stood as a stark reminder, reaching almost five feet high. The residents blamed a construction company working on a new collector for exacerbating the disaster, accusing them of leaving materials that clogged the existing drainage. The company, however, claimed their work was halted due to lack of authorization and the old collector was simply inadequate for the volume of water. Amidst the devastation, stories of resilience emerged. Zoila Castro, heavily pregnant and having lost everything, found shelter with her son. The community rallied, providing temporary housing and support for the affected families. This incident at the Quebrada Capulí highlights the complex relationship between the Quebrada Garrochal and the city. It serves as a reminder of the power of nature, the importance of infrastructure, and the strength of community in the face of adversity. The Quebrada Garrochal remains a vital part of Quito’s landscape, carrying with it the echoes of this event and the lessons learned.
