Quatre Lances Installation

Has anyone ever noticed how art can breathe new life into a place? Here at the Quatre Lances installation, it’s more than just a sculpture. Originally designed for the Fondation Maeght, this large standing mobile found its true home here in 1966, thanks to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. The sculpture’s journey is a story of resilience and rediscovery. After weathering the Mediterranean winds and a temporary relocation during the Grimaldi Forum’s construction, the Quatre Lances returned to the public eye. This time, it’s nestled within a specially designed courtyard by renowned architect Renzo Piano. Piano, a long-time admirer of Calder’s work, created a “single-artwork museum” that complements the sculpture perfectly. The courtyard, with its reflecting pool, fulfills Calder’s original vision for the piece. The Quatre Lances itself is a captivating dance of form and color. The black, bolted-steel elements, seemingly simple at first glance, reveal a hidden vibrancy. Their undersides reflect bursts of white, yellow, red, and orange onto the water below. This interplay of light and shadow, amplified by the slightest breeze, brings the sculpture to life. It becomes a kinetic marvel, constantly evolving in harmony with its surroundings. The sculpture’s presence in Mareterra signifies more than just a homecoming. It represents the fusion of art and place, a concept Calder deeply valued.
