Once a bustling hub for the wine trade, today the Quartier de Bercy offers a blend of modern architecture and green spaces. This area has transformed dramatically over the centuries. Let’s explore its evolution.

The Quartier de Bercy’s story stretches back to Neolithic times. Evidence suggests human occupation here as early as 4000 BC. Fast forward to the twelfth century. The name Bercy, or Bercix, first appeared in property deeds. The area passed through the hands of the Montmorency and Malon families. François Le Vau even expanded an old manor house into the Château de Bercy.

However, the eighteenth century marked a turning point. A large site along the Seine became a warehousing area. It thrived as the center of the Paris wine trade for two centuries. The Quartier de Bercy developed a unique culture around this industry. Imagine the clinking of bottles and lively chatter of merchants.

In 1860, Bercy’s status changed again. It was formerly a commune but was dissolved. The north-west portion was consolidated into Paris. The south-east portion became part of Charenton-le-Pont.

Today, the Quartier de Bercy boasts several landmarks. The Ministry of the Economy and Finance building is often simply called “Bercy.” Its extremity plunges into the Seine. Two fast boats are moored there for VIP transportation. Consider the power and influence concentrated in this building.

Sports and entertainment also have a home in the Quartier de Bercy. The Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy hosts many events. It is now known as AccorHotels Arena.

For those seeking green spaces, the Parc de Bercy offers a refreshing escape. The Cinémathèque Française, designed by Frank Gehry, stands as a monument to film. The Cour Saint-Émilion shopping complex provides retail therapy. The UGC Ciné Cité Bercy offers a wide array of movies. The Musée des Arts Forains showcases fairground art.

Getting around is easy with Line 14 of the Metro. Bercy and Cour Saint-Émilion stations serve the area. The district is accessible by train or metro. Paris Bercy Bourgogne Pays d’Auvergne train station connects to many regions of France.

The Olympics will be held in Paris. The Accor Arena in Quartier de Bercy will host gymnastics, basketball and trampoline events.

The Quartier de Bercy has street food. Bercy Village offers a variety of bistros and restaurants serving world foods. La Felicità provides a foodie heaven.

The population density in Quartier de Bercy is among the lowest in Paris. The area includes the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Accor Arena, and Parc de Bercy. Also present are railway facilities and the interchange of the Porte de Bercy highway.

The restructuring and renovation of the Quartier de Bercy marked the end of the warehouses. Their memory lives on in the park that replaced them. It also persists in the name of the metro station: Cour Saint-Émilion. Their architecture inspired the creation of a commercial and leisure area, Bercy Village, with its boutiques and terraces. East of this zone, a business district is organized around Place des Vins-de-France.
