Can a house whisper secrets of war? Quarters H can. Here on Ford Island, amidst the calm of present-day Honolulu, Quarters H stands as a silent witness to the chaos of December 7, 1941. Quarters H wasn’t just a home, it was one of a cluster built for married Chief Petty Officers in 1923 on Belleau Woods Loop. These homes stood separate from the officer’s housing on Nob Hill, but close enough to share the same terrifying morning. Quarters H and its neighbors had a front-row seat to the attack on Battleship Row. The USS Maryland, USS Oklahoma, USS Arizona, and USS Nevada were moored nearby. As these battleships burned, oil-soaked sailors swam ashore, seeking refuge in the yards of these homes. Some even grabbed clothes off the clotheslines of Quarters H and its neighbors. Imagine the scene, the smell of burning oil and the desperate cries of survivors echoing around Quarters H. In the aftermath, Quarters H became a hub of activity. The USS Oklahoma had capsized and sunk right in its backyard. The massive machinery used to right the battleship surrounded Quarters H. Crews worked day and night, creating a constant din of activity. The families who once called these homes their own had been evacuated, a blessing perhaps, given the noise and upheaval. Quarters H witnessed another transformation in the 1950s. Two of its neighboring homes were moved to Belleau Woods Loop. One, known as Facility 30, found a new life in the Nob Hill neighborhood, even serving as John Wayne’s home in the 1965 film “In Harm’s Way.” Quarters H remained, a steadfast sentinel of a time both tragic and transformative. Today, only a handful of these CPO homes still stand, and Quarters H is among them. It whispers stories of resilience, of ordinary families caught in extraordinary circumstances, a reminder of the day when the world changed, right here, in the shadow of Quarters H.
