“Imagine life in Quarters F during World War II” Quarters F in Honolulu a historic naval housing area stands before you. These aren’t just houses. They’re silent witnesses to pivotal moments in history. Built in 1936 these charming bungalows once housed Chief Petty Officers and their families. Imagine the tranquility of daily life before December 7 1941.

The attack on Pearl Harbor dramatically altered the lives of Quarters F residents. The nearby battleships blazed. Sailors oil-soaked and desperate swam ashore. Stories speak of clothes snatched from lines drying in the sun. One home even caught fire. The chaos was unimaginable. The USS Oklahoma capsized sinking in the very backyards of these homes.

The aftermath was equally dramatic. The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard undertook an incredible feat. They refloated the capsized USS Oklahoma. Quarters F stood in the heart of this massive operation. The constant work of salvage crews created relentless noise. If families hadn’t been evacuated sleep would have been impossible.

Life in Quarters F continued though greatly changed. In the 1950s some homes were moved. Others were demolished. Building 30 relocated to Nob Hill. It gained fame as the home of John Wayne’s character in the 1965 film In Harm’s Way. This home endures undergoing restoration today.

Despite their historical significance Quarters F fell into disrepair. In the late 1990s the Navy planned demolition. But thanks to community efforts particularly the Historic Hawaii Foundation the Navy sought caretakers instead. Today only a handful of the original homes remain. Neglect has taken its toll. Building 29 for example suffered a massive roof collapse. Its interior has been exposed to the elements for years.

In 2005 the Historic Hawaii Foundation listed Quarters F among the Nine Most Endangered Sites in Hawaii. In 2008 the bungalows became part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. Yet even today the site lacks consistent care and management. As you stand here remember the resilience of those who lived here. Their lives and the stories of Quarters F deserve to be remembered and protected for generations to come.
