“Picture this: a lake born from a crater, now a haven for recreation.” That’s Quarry Lake Reserve, right where we stand. This isn’t just any lake. It’s Lake Pupuke, a popular spot on the North Shore.

The Quarry Lake Reserve area has seen a big increase in use over the past decade. People come for picnics, walks, fishing and even sailing model yachts. Weddings are popular here too.

Lake Pupuke covers 107 hectares with a shoreline of 4.3 kilometers. Imagine the training ground it has been for top sportsmen and women. It provides a unique environment for recreation.

But popularity comes with challenges. The council is working to keep Lake Pupuke healthy. They want to prevent conflicts and crowds. You see, shore space is in demand for storing and launching watercraft. Rowing skiffs, outrigger canoes, and windsurfers all need space.

The Quarry Lake Reserve design was conceptualized to improve experience, access, wayfinding and sense of place. The design establishes clearly defined routes between open spaces. It connects adjacent destination facilities. Viewing platforms, sculptural elements, and seating are included to activate the open spaces.

Design inspiration comes from the quarrying process, geology, and landform. It plays off ideas of measurement, industry, and associated materiality. The sensitivity of the environment is a key consideration. Enhancement planting upgrades amenity and lake embankment transitions. This improves existing habitat for local fauna.

Water quality has been stable over the last decade. It’s generally better than in the 1970s and 1980s. However, more people could affect the quality.

Floating rafts of weed can trap sailboarders. Hand-harvesting controls these weeds. The Auckland Regional Council monitors blue-green algae blooms. One summer, these blooms were confined to the Quarry Lake.

Increasing numbers of geese and black swan are soiling reserves. This raises public health concerns about faecal bacteria in the water. To address these issues, the council restricts the number, size, and type of events held around the lake.

The lake bed is owned by the Crown. The Auckland Regional Council manages the waters and bed. The North Shore council manages activities on the lake and reserves.

Remember that plan to keep Lake Pupuke healthy? The public had two months to comment on the draft. This shows how much the community cares about this place.

So, as you enjoy the views, remember the history and the efforts to preserve this special place. Quarry Lake Reserve is more than just a pretty lake. It is a testament to community, recreation, and environmental stewardship.
