What whispers echo along the Quai Aulagnier? This stretch along the Seine has seen more than its share of history. Quai Aulagnier stretches from Quai du Docteur-Dervaux to Quai des Grésillons. It runs beneath the Gennevilliers bridge and the Saint-Ouen railway bridge. It’s named after a generous benefactor, Mr. Aulagnier. In 1890, he bequeathed a substantial sum of 370,000 francs to Asnières-sur-Seine. The town used the money to build a retirement home, a chapel, and employ nuns. Quai Aulagnier, like many quays along the Seine, has existed for centuries. Before motorized river navigation, it served as a towpath. The bridges crossing the Seine here made it a strategic target during World War I. Number 161 on Quai Aulagnier narrowly escaped a shell from the infamous Big Bertha. The shell landed in the river instead. Quai Aulagnier is also home to Port Van Gogh at number 2. It houses the SIRA, an artists’ residence. Number 117 marks the spot of a restaurant depicted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, Le Restaurant Rispal à Asnières. At number 225, you’ll find a former Citroën factory. Interestingly, the architect Charles Knight originally designed this factory in 1925 for the Ford Motor Company. Lastly, number 230 is the site of the former Aulagnier hospice-asylum, which opened on September 4, 1898. Quai Aulagnier offers a glimpse into a rich past, blending industry, philanthropy, and art along the Seine’s edge.
