Did you know this samba school was almost a soccer team? That’s right. The Quadra da G.R.E.S. Unidos de Vila Isabel has a unique origin story.

Welcome to the Quadra da G.R.E.S. Unidos de Vila Isabel. It is more than just a building. It is a vibrant hub of samba culture. It pulses with the rhythm of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1945 Vila Isabel had a block known as Red and White. Some members left and formed a soccer team. They chose blue and white for their colors. This team eventually transformed into a samba school. Antonio Fernandes da Silveira known as Seu China registered it. On April 4 1946 Unidos de Vila Isabel opened its doors. Seu China’s home served as the school’s headquarters until 1958.

Unidos de Vila Isabel carries a proud legacy. Its symbol is a crown. This represents Princess Isabel. The school’s colors are blue and white. These were chosen to honor Azul e Branco do Salgueiro. Seu China previously frequented this school.

Martinho da Vila is one of the school’s most famous figures. He joined in 1965. Martinho helped restructure the samba compositions. He introduced softer lyrics and melodies.

The school first won in the special group in 1988. The theme song was Kizomba a festa da raca. The parade used alternative materials like straw and sisal. Many consider this one of the best shows ever. A severe storm prevented the Parade of Champions from happening that year.

In 2006 Vila Isabel won again. The theme was Soy loco por ti America. The samba celebrated Latin American culture. The Venezuelan oil company PDVSA funded the carnival.

Luiz Guimaraes became president in June 2022 at only 24 years old. This made him the youngest leader of a samba school. For the 2023 carnival Paulo Barros created an enredo. It was about religious festivals around the world.

Unidos de Vila Isabel has earned many awards. These include the Estandarte de Ouro. It is considered the Oscar of the Carnival. The school also won Tamborim de Ouro and Premio SRzd.

The Quadra da G.R.E.S. Unidos de Vila Isabel stands as a testament. It shows the enduring power and passion of samba. Its story is woven into the very fabric of Vila Isabel. It reflects the heart of Rio’s Carnival.
