Flowing quietly through southwest London is the Pyl Brook. This small stream is more than just a waterway. It is a lifeline that weaves through the landscape. The Pyl Brook eventually joins Beverley Brook, which flows into the River Thames.

The main Pyl Brook stretches 5.3 kilometers. It begins in Sutton Common, in Sutton. The East Pyl Brook adds another 3.9 kilometers to the network. This tributary starts its journey also in Sutton. It meets the main Pyl Brook east of Grand Drive in Raynes Park.

Did you know there are even local nature reserves along the East Pyl? One such reserve spans 1.3 hectares. It nestles between the brook and the back gardens of houses on Rutland Drive, Morden. This area is also a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II. In the mid-1980s, the London Wildlife Trust took care of the site. It is no longer on their list of reserves. Mature hawthorn and elm scrub thrive here. You will find areas of crack-willow, elder, blackthorn, and bramble too. Sadly, there is no public access. The entrance gate remains locked.

The Pyl Brook also meanders through Morden Park Local Nature Reserve. East Pyl Brook flows through Morden Park, then runs under a neighborhood in Lower Morden via a culvert. Finally, it joins the main Pyl Brook near Morden Cemetery.

Beverley Brook, the main recipient of the Pyl Brook’s waters, is about 9 miles long. It begins at Cuddington Recreation Park in Worcester Park. It passes through Motspur Park, New Malden, Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park, and Barnes. It meets the River Thames near Putney Bridge at Barn Elms. The name Beverley Brook comes from “beaver”. Beavers were known to live in the brook. They have been extinct in Britain since the 16th century.

The Pyl Brook is a tributary of Beverley Brook. Both brooks are on the Environment Agency’s watch list. They are susceptible to flooding.

Once upon a time, Beverley Brook suffered from poorly treated sewage. This came from a sewage works in Green Lane, Worcester Park. Fortunately, things improved in 1998. Better treatment methods were introduced. The range of wildlife species in the river has steadily increased since then.

So, as you stand here by the Pyl Brook, remember its journey. It’s a story of nature, resilience, and change in the heart of London.
