Picture a grand building. It stands proudly on the corner of Oxford Road and Disraeli Road. This is the Putney School of Art & Design. Its story begins not in 1895 when its current building opened but much earlier in 1883. Three prominent figures Sir William Lancaster Baron Pollock and Sir Arthur Jeff had a vision. They wanted to establish an art school in Putney.

For eleven years the school resided in humble parish offices on Putney High Street. Then came the move. John W Wallis a skilled architect designed the building we see today. Imagine the excitement on October 2 1895 when the doors finally opened. Six studios awaited eager students. One special studio on the first floor boasted large north-facing windows and a breathtaking vaulted wooden ceiling. This remains a highlight for artists even now.

The school’s journey continued. In 1906 London County Council took over its management. Today Wandsworth Borough Council and Enable Leisure and Culture share that responsibility. A new studio and cafe were added in 2009 reflecting the school’s ongoing commitment to its community. The Putney School of Art & Design isn’t just a school it’s a vibrant hub.

It offers a diverse range of courses. From painting and drawing to printmaking sculpture and ceramics there’s something for everyone. Digital design is also a prominent course reflecting modern needs. Beginners seasoned artists and mixed-ability groups are all welcome. Courses cater to young people too. They even offer A-level portfolio development to help students progress to higher education. Short courses and holiday courses provide additional options. A two-year part-time art and design diploma is available.

Wandsworth Borough residents benefit from reduced course fees. This demonstrates the school’s deep connection to the local community. The Friends of Putney School of Art & Design a dedicated charity actively supports the school and its outreach programs. The school has nurtured exceptional talent over the years. Notable staff like John William Allison and James Bowyer shaped generations of artists. Students like Ethel Walker Irene Mary Browne and many others went on to achieve incredible things in the world of art.

The Putney School of Art & Design isn’t just about the past. It’s a thriving institution. It continues to inspire creativity in the community. Its rich history is evident in its beautiful building its diverse courses and its commitment to nurturing artistic talent. The legacy of Sir William Lancaster Baron Pollock and Sir Arthur Jeff lives on. Step inside and experience the inspiring atmosphere for yourself.
