Haven for researchers. That is Pusat Pengkajian Islam & Masyarakat UIN Jakarta. It is a research institution. It resides within the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta.
Pusat Pengkajian Islam & Masyarakat was founded on April 1 1995. It brings together scholars. These scholars come from diverse disciplines. They also have varied backgrounds. The goal is to conduct research. They also do training and disseminate information. This focuses on Islam in Indonesia. It also includes Islam in Southeast Asia.
Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s academic discourse considered Islam in Indonesia a marginal issue. Islam in Indonesia and Southeast Asia received little attention. People thought it was not part of mainstream Islam. They saw it as separate from developments in Arab North Africa and Iran. Some even saw it as not truly Islamic.
Anthony Reid noted the appeal of studying Islam in Indonesia. Southeast Asia has a large Muslim population. This makes it a significant force in the Islamic world. The region’s geography with its archipelago and fertile lands influences religious expression. Agrarian societies prioritize group solidarity. This fosters tolerance and openness to differences.
Islam in Indonesia readily embraces cultural ethnic religious and new ideas. Its unique development has drawn many scholars. The rise of Islam sees increased religious practices. Scholars are writing about religious re-actualization. They also discuss transformation into social political and economic life. These factors paint a picture of dynamic Islamic discourse.
After the tragic events of September 11 the discourse on Islam in Indonesia shifted. Terrorist events like the 2002 Bali bombings brought Islam in Indonesia into global discussions of Islam and terrorism. As religious conservatism and radicalism grew Indonesian Muslims faced complex issues about religion. They also discussed its role in public life.
A need arose. It was for an institution to research the dynamics of Islam in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Pusat Pengkajian Islam & Masyarakat UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta was established for this purpose.
Today Pusat Pengkajian Islam & Masyarakat focuses on strategic studies. These studies concern religious life and education. The aim is to influence policy. The goal is also to effect societal change in Indonesia. The institution remains committed. It wants to develop and spread the rich traditions of Indonesian Islam. This is to enrich values in a broader context.
Pusat Pengkajian Islam & Masyarakat initiated the REACT program. REACT stands for Religious Environmentalism Actions. The Dutch government directly supports it. This program connects religious principles with environmental actions. It motivates Islamic boarding schools to boost their environmental conservation work.
The study identifies key strategies. These are waste management and land use for gardening. Water conservation efforts are also important. These have become part of pesantren existence. The study examines the link between religion and environmental awareness. It also assesses the execution of sustainable initiatives.
The notion of Greening Islam integrates Islamic principles with eco-friendly actions. Examples are garbage charity and oxygen charity. Oxygen charity involves tree planting. Another example is the endowment of water sources. This involves fixing contaminated springs.
Sustainable environments are supported by eco-friendly pesantren practices. These include waste management and conservation. They also cover biodiversity and sustainable agriculture. Other practices are alternative energy and water efficiency. Also important are environmental education and eco-friendly infrastructure.
Studies have found that religious values can strongly drive environmental action. Pesantren that include women in program leadership show more sustainable results. Increasing women’s participation in decision-making is vital. It is not just for gender equality. It is also a strategic factor for effective environmental programs.
