Before us stands the Pusat Pengkajian dan Pengembangan Islam Jakarta a testament to faith and resilience. This magnificent complex wasn’t always a center for Islamic learning.
The Jakarta Islamic Centre as it’s also known has a fascinating history. It stands on the site of a former red-light district Kramat Tunggak. This district existed from 1972 until its closure in 1999. Local communities actively opposed its presence. The transformation is remarkable.
In 2001 Governor Sutiyoso had a vision. He proposed building the Jakarta Islamic Centre. This wasn’t just about building a mosque. He aimed to create a hub for Islamic civilization in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Professor Azyumardi Azra a key figure in this initiative helped shape this ambitious plan.
Construction began. The center opened in 2003. It covers seven hectares. A large mosque dominates the complex occupying 6000 square meters. The space is designed for Islamic learning. This includes educational business and commercial facilities. A guesthouse was built later. This expanded the area even further providing additional space. It boasts separate areas for a business center convention hall and a hotel. An education and training center further enhances its comprehensive offerings.
Sadly in October 2022 a fire during renovations damaged the main dome. Despite this setback the spirit of the Jakarta Islamic Centre remains strong. The repairs are underway. The Centre’s commitment to Islamic studies research and community engagement continues. It shows the power of faith and determination to overcome adversity.
