Painted in a vibrant shade of “Purple Reign,” the Purple Raindrop Sculpture at Fairview Park isn’t just a piece of art. It’s a tribute to a Minneapolis legend. This 15-foot tall metal sculpture, created by local artist Esther Osayande, honors Prince, his iconic song “Purple Rain,” and his profound impact on the music world. The Purple Raindrop also serves as a seating area, inviting visitors to pause and reflect. It was installed in 2018 as part of the “Assemble Project,” a public art initiative aimed at diversifying the city’s artistic landscape. Osayande envisioned the Purple Raindrop as a community gathering space, a place where people could connect and celebrate Prince’s legacy. The inspiration for the piece struck Osayande shortly after Prince’s death in 2016. While waiting for a bus, she heard “Purple Rain” playing, a moment she interpreted as a sign. The Purple Raindrop stands as a vibrant symbol of community pride and a testament to the enduring power of music. It’s more than just a sculpture. It’s a place where art, music, and memory converge.
