Isn’t it amazing that Jakarta has a seaside temple too? Here we are at Pura Segara. It is not just a temple. It’s a spiritual haven by the sea.

Pura Segara stands proudly in Cilincing, North Jakarta. This temple offers a unique spiritual experience. It is the only temple by the sea in the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi area.

To reach Pura Segara, we will walk along Jalan Cilincing Rekreasi. A red fence marks the path to the temple. A short three-minute walk brings us to the temple grounds. Remember, ladies, if you are menstruating, you cannot enter the inner sanctum.

Before entering Pura Segara, take the holy water offered. The entrance features a pair of pillars forming a gate. A black fence stands between these gates. Dewa Gede Sudiharto, the caretaker, will guide us. In front of the temple, there is a pendopo, a gathering place. As we enter the complex, notice the sea views on one side. This area is used for prayer.

Sudiharto explains the name. “Because it is by the sea, it is called Pura Segara.” Local Hindus saw Dewa Baruna, the sea god, manifest here. Thus, they built the temple by the sea.

Pura Segara’s architecture is distinctly Balinese. Balinese carvings adorn every wall. Outside the prayer area, two statues stand guard on either side of a fence. Inside, the temple holds a place of worship for Dewa Baruna. Here, Hindus offer their prayers.

Pura Segara often hosts the Melasti ceremony. It is a purification ritual. Even Governor Anies Baswedan attended the ceremony on March 11, 2018.

Ir. I Nyoman Suharta, Deputy of Logistics, inaugurated Pura Segara on December 10, 1992. Inside the prayer room, a plaque commemorates the inauguration. It also features the swastika symbol.

Pura Segara is more than a temple. It is a connection to faith, nature, and Balinese culture. It offers a peaceful retreat from Jakarta’s hustle. The sound of the waves enhances the spiritual atmosphere. Take a moment to appreciate this unique sacred space. Remember the history and the blessings of Pura Segara.
