Can you feel the ocean mist on your skin? This is Pura Luhur Tanah Lot. It is one of Bali’s most iconic and venerated sea temples. This sacred place stands majestically on a rock. Waves crash around its base.

Pura Luhur Tanah Lot isn’t just a temple. It’s a testament to Bali’s rich Hindu history and stunning natural beauty. Legend says that in the 15th century, a Brahmin priest named Dang Hyang Nirartha journeyed from Java to Bali. He spread Hinduism throughout the island.

During his travels, Dang Hyang Nirartha saw a sacred light emanating from the sea. He followed the light to Beraban village in Tabanan. The village was led by Bendesa Beraban Sakti. Bendesa opposed Dang Hyang Nirartha’s teachings. He was a follower of monotheism.

Dang Hyang Nirartha meditated on a rock. It resembled a beo or parrot. Bendesa Beraban tried many times to drive him away. Legend says that Dang Hyang Nirartha used his spiritual powers. He moved the rock into the ocean. He named it Tanah Lot meaning land in the middle of the sea.

Dang Hyang Nirartha also created snakes from his scarf to guard the temple. The snakes are said to be more venomous than cobras. Witnessing this power, Bendesa Beraban Sakti became a follower of Dang Hyang Nirartha. He embraced Hinduism along with the villagers.

Before leaving, Dang Hyang Nirartha gave a kris or dagger to Bendesa Beraban. It could cure plant diseases. The kris is kept in Puri Kediri. A ceremony is held at Pura Luhur Tanah Lot every six months. The villagers’ prosperity increased with plentiful harvests. They lived in harmony.

Pura Luhur Tanah Lot is part of the Dang Kahyangan temples. It is a sea temple dedicated to the gods of the sea. You can walk to the temple at low tide. However, only Balinese Hindus are allowed to enter.

Look to the north. You will see another temple. It is built on a cliff. It is called Pura Batu Bolong. The cliff connects the temple to the mainland like a bridge.

The sunsets at Pura Luhur Tanah Lot are famous. The temple stands silhouetted against the colorful sky. This creates a breathtaking scene. It is a photographer’s dream.

The temple has undergone renovations to protect it from erosion. Tetrapods act as wave breakers. Artificial reefs strengthen the cliffs. These efforts preserve Pura Luhur Tanah Lot’s beauty for generations.

Pura Luhur Tanah Lot’s Odalan or anniversary is celebrated every 210 days. The celebration falls near Galungan and Kuningan. It takes place on Buda Wage Langkir day.

Pura Luhur Tanah Lot is more than just a tourist spot. It is a sacred place with a rich history. It embodies the spiritual and natural beauty of Bali. As you leave, remember the legends. Remember the stunning sunsets. Carry the spirit of Tanah Lot with you.
