“Can you feel the ancient energy humming beneath your feet?” Here at Pura Dalem Penataran, it is more than just a temple. It is a living testament to Bali’s enduring spiritual heritage. Pura Dalem Penataran is located on Cokroaminoto Street in Denpasar.

Pura Dalem Penataran’s story stretches back centuries. Some estimate its origins to the 18th or 19th century. An inscription on the Gedong Dalem building indicates the year 1793. This could be equivalent to 1871 in the Gregorian calendar. Originally, Pura Dalem Penataran was a family temple. It belonged to the Griya Gede Taman Intaran. Over time, Balinese tradition dictated that each village needed three key temples. Pura Dalem Penataran was then adopted by the Intaran village as one of their Kahyangan Tiga temples.

This Pura is closely linked to Griya Gede Taman Intaran and Banjar Taman Sari. Local elders say Ida Pedanda Made Alangkajeng played a key role. He created sacred grounds around the Mimba gardens. This area became known as Banjar Taman Sari.

Observe Pura Dalem Penataran’s layout. It embodies the classic Tri Mandala concept. There are three sections. Jaba Sisi is the outer courtyard. Jaba Tengah is the middle courtyard. Jeroan is the inner and most sacred courtyard. Walls enclose the Jeroan and Jaba Tengah. A Candi Bentar gate connects the Jaba Sisi to the Jaba Tengah. The Kori Agung gate leads from the Jaba Tengah to the Jeroan.

Within the Jeroan, you will find key structures. These are Gedong Dalem, Palinggih Hyang Api, and Sumur Suci. There are also Palinggih Prajapati, Bale Pesanekan Sasuhunan Siwa Dampati, and Sumur. Other buildings include Bale Pesantian, Tajuk, Bale Pawedan, Bale Pesanekan, and Bale Gong. The Jaba Tengah features a Wantilan pavilion.

Pura Dalem Penataran has both genealogical and territorial significance. The Griya Gede Taman Intaran family originally maintained it. It also serves as a territorial temple for the Banjar Taman Sari community. The Intaran village community also supports it. The Piodalan ceremony occurs every six months. It falls on Anggarakasih Wuku Tambir.

Notice the Gedong Dalem. This main building faces west. It features brickwork and intricate carvings. Look for the Surya Candra carving above the entrance. Inside, an inscription marks the year 1793. Three Dwarapala statues stand guard on the terrace. The Palinggih Sumur Suci is northeast of the Gedong Dalem. People use its holy water for religious ceremonies.

Examine the Palinggih Hyang Api or Lebuh Geni. This shrine is east of the Gedong Dalem. It also faces west. The Paduraksa Candi Kurung or Kori Agung connects the middle and inner courtyards. The gate dates back to 1955. You can also see several Dwarapala statues around Pura Dalem Penataran.

Pura Dalem Penataran stands as a heritage treasure. Its architecture and history offer a unique glimpse into Balinese culture.
