“Tough as stone” is what the villagers jokingly say about themselves. This is because “batu” means stone in Balinese. We are standing before the Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan. It is a testament to Bali’s enduring artistic and spiritual heritage.

Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan is also known as Batuan Temple. For over a thousand years, Batuan has been home to artists and craftsmen. Old legends and mysterious tales surround this village.

The temple dates back to 1020 AD. It is considered a Puseh Temple. This designation comes from the Tri Kahyangan concept taught by Mpu Kuturan. He introduced it to the Balinese Hindu community in the 10th century.

Tri Kahyangan encompasses three temples. Desa Temple is for worshiping God Brahma. Puseh Temple honors God Vishnu. Dalem Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Notice the Candi Bentar. It is the entrance gate made of red bricks. Floral ornaments decorate it. This gate marks the transition from the outer Nista Mandala to the central Madya Mandala.

Inside Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan, you’ll find the Kori Agung building. This has a special door. According to Hindu belief, gods enter through this door. People who have completed their prayers can pass through the doors on either side.

The central courtyard holds Bale Kulkul and Bale Agung. A gamelan set is here. It is used during religious ceremonies at Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan.

In the main part of Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan, you can see Padmasana and Meru buildings. There are also several pelinggih shrines. Ancient relics are housed in a wantilan building at the rear of the temple.

Interestingly, the Dwarapala statues at Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan are unique. Unlike typical gate guardians, these Dwarapala do not carry weapons and are standing.

The name Batuan may refer to an ancient megalithic tradition. Standing stones were used for meetings and worship of ancestral spirits. Because Batuan became a center for Buddhist priests and brahmans, the village has many brahmans.

Local people actively care for and preserve the temple. Some buildings have been renovated over the centuries. The original Balinese ornaments are beautifully carved. Some depict stories from the Ramayana. Each building has a different philosophical function.

When visiting Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan, remember to dress respectfully. Cover your knees and chest. Sarongs are often provided. Donations are welcome for temple maintenance.

Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan is open to tourists from 9 am to 6 pm. However, it remains open 24 hours for local worshippers. The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

Pura Dalem Dukuh Peninjoan Batuan is more than just a temple. It represents Bali’s history. It shows the influence of Hindu culture through the ancient stone carvings. You’ll find unique statues like Dwarapala, animal figures and demons. The temple connects the Balinese people to their ancestors and the Hindu gods.
