Pura Beji

Beneath the vibrant tapestry of Denpasar’s bustling markets lies a hidden sanctuary, Pura Beji. This sacred site nestles between Pasar Badung and Pasar Kumbasari, accessible by descending a bridge from either market. Pura Beji is more than just a temple; it’s a spiritual heart for local merchants and a testament to Bali’s rich cultural heritage. Pura Beji stands uniquely within the flowing waters of the Tukad Badung River. Originally situated on solid ground, with just a simple shrine at its center, the temple defied plans to elevate it to bridge level. According to Jro Mangku Taman Beji, the temple’s caretaker, the residing deity expressed a desire to remain as it was. Renovations proceeded, but Pura Beji remained nestled below the bridge, a testament to its connection with the river. At Pura Beji, the revered deity is Ratu Niang Bhatari Sakti, a symbol of prosperity and protection. This draws merchants, business owners, and traders seeking blessings for their ventures. The temple holds a special significance for the vendors of Pasar Badung and Pasar Kumbasari. Their ritual includes seeking holy water from Pura Beji to sprinkle on their stalls, believing it invites prosperity and wards off malevolent spirits. Pura Beji also offers a unique feature: a natural spring that remains a constant source of water, even when the Tukad Badung River runs dry. Located on the north side of the temple, near a cluster of bamboo, the spring is believed to hold healing properties for illnesses, aid in fertility, and bless new businesses. Those seeking these blessings bring specific offerings, including small coconuts and traditional Balinese offerings, before partaking in purification rituals at the spring. Ironically, despite its location within the riverbed, the temple structures remain remarkably unscathed, even during the heavy rains that cause the Tukad Badung to swell and submerge Pura Beji. Only the decorative umbrellas and occasionally a section of the surrounding wall have fallen victim to the rising waters. Pura Beji is a living testament to the resilience of Balinese culture and spirituality, a place where the flow of commerce and the river intertwine with the unwavering faith of its people.
