A majestic coconut tree its fronds swaying gently in the breeze stands before you. This is Pura Arya Kelambu Nyuh Aya di Tibubiu. Its story begins long ago.

This sacred temple in Denpasar holds a significant place in Balinese history. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Arya Kepakisan a pivotal figure in Bali’s past.

After the Majapahit conquest in 1352 AD rebellions flared across Bali. Arya Kepakisan arrived tasked with quelling the unrest. He succeeded in subduing 39 rebellious Bali Aga villages. His success led to his appointment as Grand Governor. Dalem Sri Kresna Kepakisan became King Sampranga I.

Arya Kepakisan then journeyed southeast. He discovered a large coconut tree Nyuh Aya. This spot became a settlement. It was named Desa Nyuh Aya in honor of the remarkable coconut. The location was marked by a Taru Agung a sacred angsana tree. Its blood-red sap added to its mystical significance. This tree still stands a silent guardian at Pura Kawitan. Arya Kepakisan established a Merajan there later transforming it into the Pura Kawitan after his death.

Later during Dalem Sri Semara Kepakisan’s reign a ferocious black tiger Macan Selem terrorized Blambangan. Arya Kepakisan was dispatched to defeat it. He succeeded bringing the tiger’s head as proof. The king rewarded him with a charter granting honors and ceremonial privileges to his descendants. The blowpipe Ki Macan Guguh used to slay the tiger remains a treasured heirloom.

The Pura Kawitan Arya Kepakisan also holds the Aji Purana. This sacred text was entrusted to Prince Nyuh Aya a son of Arya Kepakisan. Interestingly Prince Nyuh Aya was born in Desa Nyuh Aya. The temple’s significance extends far beyond its walls. It’s a living legacy a connection to a rich and storied past. The descendants of Arya Kepakisan use a special bade tumpang pitu during cremation ceremonies. It’s adorned with nine-colored cotton reflecting their unique heritage.
