How did Punta Carretas get its name? It involves shipwrecks and a cart. I will tell you the story now. We’re standing at Punta Shannon. This is a significant point within the Punta Carretas neighborhood. Punta Carretas is a barrio of Montevideo Uruguay.

Punta Carretas got its name in a roundabout way. Sailors originally called this area Punta Brava. This translates to “dangerous point.” A rock stretched underwater. This rock caused many shipwrecks. Over time people started calling it Punta Carretas. The shape of the rock resembled a cart a carreta in Spanish.

Punta Carretas is the southernmost neighborhood in Montevideo. It is known as an affluent area. You will see many high-rise apartment buildings here. Exclusive private schools are also common. International stores and restaurants add to the upscale feel of Punta Carretas.

In the 1870s the Punta Brava Lighthouse was built. It stands 21 meters tall. Locals initially called it “La Farola.” It began using electricity in 1948. The lighthouse still stands today.

An interesting fact about Punta Carretas is that it once had a hippodrome. This was between 1880 and 1890. It could hold 1500 people.

Another significant historical landmark was the Punta Carretas Penitentiary. This prison was built in 1915. It had 400 cells. It housed both common and high-risk prisoners. The prison saw a daring jailbreak in 1931. A group of anarchists dug a tunnel. The tunnel led from a firewood business to the prison bathrooms. This allowed anarchist prisoners to escape. They had been jailed for assaulting a currency exchange office. Another massive escape occurred in 1971. More than 110 Tupamaros guerrillas escaped through a 40-meter tunnel.

For much of the early 20th century Punta Carretas was sparsely populated. The presence of the prison made it less desirable. But this changed in the 1950s. People began to move into the area.

After the dictatorship the prison closed in 1986. In 1991 a real estate consortium bought the building. They remodeled it into the Punta Carretas Shopping mall. It opened in 1994. This transformation changed the neighborhood. International hotels and restaurants opened. New businesses and high-rise apartments followed. Real estate prices increased. Punta Carretas became an upper-middle-class area.

Today Punta Carretas has many landmarks. Parque Rodó lies to the north and west. The Club de Golf del Uruguay was founded in 1922. The Rambla offers beautiful seaside views. You can see monuments like the Mahatma Gandhi statue. The Holocaust memorial is also there. Pittamiglio Castle stands out with its unique architecture. Avenida Ellauri is the main road. It has many businesses and the Punta Carretas Shopping mall. Villa Biarritz Park provides green space.

Punta Carretas has a rich history. It has transformed from a dangerous coastal area to a modern affluent neighborhood. Punta Shannon offers a vantage point to appreciate this evolution. As you look around remember the stories of shipwrecks prisons and reinvention that define Punta Carretas.
