The street we’re standing on, Avenida Punta de Rieles, is a reminder of a time long past. This was once the terminus for the electric tram line 54, the very first of its kind in Montevideo. Before that, it was part of a vast stretch of land owned by the Convent of San Francisco, a gift from a local farmer, Luis José Ximénez, in 1772. This land was a perfect example of a traditional Uruguayan chacra – a rural farm. In colonial times, this area was known for its sprawling fields, cattle ranches, and vineyards. Today, Punta de Rieles is a bustling urban center, home to a community where history, culture, and modern life coexist. This vibrant area is a testament to the evolution of Montevideo itself. The street is named after the tram line that once traversed its path. This charming neighborhood has preserved remnants of its past. In 2011, the Plaza Museo y Memoria was constructed right here to remember the women who were imprisoned during the dictatorship. It’s a poignant reminder of the struggles for freedom and justice that once took place on these very streets.
