Why on earth would a place be named “Nativity Scene Point”? Punta Pesebre, here at the southwestern edge of Fuerteventura, seems to have a rather peculiar name. It’s actually a misunderstanding that stuck. In the 18th century, Spanish cartographers were tasked with mapping the Canary Islands. They relied on locals to name landmarks, and here, they encountered a linguistic hiccup. The Canarian dialect, with its unique pronunciation, led them to misinterpret “Punta Percebe” as “Punta Pesebre.” “Percebe” refers to goose barnacles, which cling to the black lava rocks here, much like a nativity scene adorns a landscape. These barnacles, white against the dark rocks, reminded fishermen of the festive scenes. Today, this place is much more than a cartographic quirk. It offers a raw, untamed beauty. Look around and you’ll see why. The lighthouse here isn’t actually a true lighthouse. It’s what’s known as a “light beacon.” Its reach is shorter, designed to guide boats along this particularly treacherous stretch of coastline. The waters here hold hidden dangers – reefs lie just a few meters below the surface, posing a threat to ships, especially during strong swells. You might even catch a glimpse of Caleta de la Madera, a secluded bay only reachable by boat, nestled below us. Now, feast your eyes on the breathtaking views. On a clear day, you can see all the way to El Cotillo at the northern tip of the island.
