How did this colossal structure rise from the Elbe Valley? Before us stands the Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha a testament to engineering prowess. Built between 1927 and 1930 this pumped-storage power plant was among the first of its kind on such a grand scale. It’s located in Dresden’s Cossebaude and Niederwartha districts.
Initially designed with six generating units the Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha boasted a capacity of 120 megawatts. This was a remarkable achievement for its time. A true symbol of the 1920s industrial architecture. Sadly four of these units are now decommissioned. Currently the plant operates with a reduced capacity of 40 megawatts using only two turbines.
The Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha’s history is marked by a race against time. Engineers competed to be the first to commission a large-scale pumped-storage power plant. The Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha narrowly beat the Koepchenwerk at Hengsteysee. Its first machine went online on November 27 1929. The final unit wasn’t fully operational until March 1930.
World War II interrupted the plant’s operations. Its electrical equipment was dismantled as reparations and sent to the Soviet Union. The reconstruction after 1945 was phased. Four new machines were installed. Later the original four returned from the Soviet Union two from Escher Wyss and two from Voith. The Escher-Wyss units were scrapped. New piping was constructed for the remaining Voith units. The power plant’s machinery hall was expanded. By 1960 all six generating units were back online.
The Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha’s architectural design was a collaboration. Dresden architect Emil Högg and Friedrich Rötschke created the plan. Professor Kurt Beyer oversaw the engineering. The same architectural style was used for an expansion from 1957 to 1960. The brick facade remained consistent only slightly lighter and redder in tone. This remarkable structure is now a protected monument.
In 2002 the Elbe River flooded causing significant damage. The plant was gradually restored. Only two turbines were repaired and put back into service. Vattenfall initially planned to decommission it in 2016. However it continued operating for emergency purposes. A smaller incident occurred in 2022 when a small parachute was found at a transformer station. Investigators suspected an attempt to damage the power supply.
Despite the resilience and the historical significance of the Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha it faced economic challenges. Vattenfall considered modernization costs of 80 to 100 million euros too high. The decision to permanently shut down the Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha was made in August 2023 for economic reasons.
The Pumpspeicherwerk Niederwartha stands as a powerful symbol. It’s a tribute to engineering innovation. It’s a significant piece of Dresden’s industrial heritage. This marvel of 1920s technology is now silent. However its story will continue to fascinate generations to come.
