Pullman National Historical Park

In the heart of Chicago, a neighborhood holds the echoes of a bygone era. This is Pullman National Historical Park. A place where the spirit of industry and the fight for workers’ rights intertwine. Pullman National Historical Park isn’t just a collection of old buildings. It’s a journey back to the late 19th century, to a time when George Pullman, a sleeping car magnate, had a vision. But this seemingly idyllic community was soon shaken by labor unrest. The Pullman Strike of 1894, sparked by wage cuts and poor living conditions, became a pivotal moment in American labor history. It led to the creation of Labor Day as a federal holiday. The park also tells the story of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Founded in 1925 by A. Philip Randolph, this was the first African American labor union. The Pullman porters, who made up a significant portion of Pullman’s workforce, fought tirelessly for fair treatment and better working conditions.
