Islands within islands. That’s the unexpected reality of Singapore’s geography. Today, we’re focusing on one such islet, Pulau Pergam.

Pulau Pergam is a small, uninhabited island off Singapore’s western coast. It’s a place of quiet mystery. It stretches just 267 meters long and about 113 meters wide.

Now here’s where things get interesting. Pulau Pergam is within the Live Firing Area of the Lim Chu Kang Restricted/Reserve Area. This means it’s off-limits to casual visitors. Safety is paramount. Across the straits from Pulau Pergam lies Kota Iskandar in Nusajaya, Johor. It is another interesting place that deserves a visit.

Pulau Pergam is one of three islands in the Western Water Catchment. The others are Pulau Bajau and Pulau Sarimbun. Pulau Bajau is located within Poyan Reservoir.

The Western Water Catchment is a significant area in Singapore. It borders Tuas and Pioneer to the south. Sungei Kadut, Choa Chu Kang, and Tengah are to its east. Jurong West is to its southeast. Lim Chu Kang is to its north. The Straits of Johor define its western edge. It’s the largest planning area in Singapore. It covers nearly a tenth of the island. It is one of Singapore’s two main water catchments. The other is Central Water Catchment.

Within the Western Water Catchment are four reservoirs. These are Tengeh Reservoir, Poyan Reservoir, Murai Reservoir, and Sarimbun Reservoir. Part of this area is used for live-firing exercises by the Singapore Armed Forces. This adds another layer to Pulau Pergam’s story.

The SAFTI Live Firing Area began in 1968. It was revamped in 2008. The eastern part started operations in 2002. It has since expanded to Lim Chu Kang Tracks 11 and 13.

The Western Water Catchment has a rich history. Pasir Laba Battery was a military fort opened between 1936 and 1942. Pasir Laba Camp opened on June 18, 1966. The SAFTI Live Firing Area was established in 1967. Residents within the boundaries were moved to Boon Lay. Factories relocated to the Jurong Industrial Area. By 1994, remaining villages like Kampong Berih and Chua Chu Kang Village were gone.

Today, Pulau Pergam remains a protected, uninhabited islet. It plays a silent but crucial role in Singapore’s ecosystem and military training. Its waters contribute to the nation’s water supply. Its restricted access ensures safety and security. So next time you glance towards Singapore’s western coast, remember Pulau Pergam. Remember its hidden existence. Remember its importance within the larger landscape.
