Whispers of ancient battles drift on the sea breeze. Welcome to Pulau Hantu Kecil Little Ghost Island. This tiny islet holds a history as dramatic as its name suggests. Legend speaks of fierce Malay warriors locked in a deadly duel their spirits forever bound to this land.

Pulau Hantu Kecil is one of two islets that make up Pulau Hantu. The name translates to Ghost Island. It’s a fitting moniker for a place steeped in legend. The other islet is Pulau Hantu Besar Big Ghost Island. Together they form a unique haven.

Originally much smaller Pulau Hantu Kecil has seen significant changes. Massive land reclamation between 1974 and 1975 dramatically increased the island’s size. 400000 cubic meters of sand transformed the landscape. A narrow strip now separates the reclaimed land from the original island. This is visible near the restrooms on Pulau Hantu Besar. The original island that peeked above the water at high tide is now marked by overgrown vegetation.

Despite its proximity to industrial Pulau Bukom the waters surrounding Pulau Hantu Kecil teem with life. Coral reefs flourish. Divers and snorkelers are drawn to the abundant marine life. You might spot clownfish anemones shrimps giant clams and colourful nudibranchs. The reefs around Pulau Hantu Besar are even more extensive.

At low tide you can walk between the two islets. But beware of the incoming tide. Ensure you return to dry land before the water rises. The journey to Pulau Hantu Kecil is an adventure in itself. You’ll need to charter a boat. These boats are usually work boats that aren’t designed for leisurely trips.
