“Two islands, but one name whispers on the wind: Pulau Hantu Besar,” I begin, our boat bobbing gently just offshore. “And its smaller sibling, Pulau Hantu Kechil. Together they form Pulau Hantu, a place steeped in legend and brimming with life.” Pulau Hantu Besar and Pulau Hantu Kechil rise from the Straits of Singapore, south of the main island. These islands, totaling 12.6 hectares, offer a unique escape. At low tide, a shallow lagoon emerges, connecting the two. But as the tide rises, the passage disappears, isolating each island once more. The name itself, Pulau Hantu, translates to “Ghost Island.” This name, steeped in local lore, speaks of ancient Malay warriors. They clashed in fierce duels to the death, their spirits now said to roam the islands. The most famous tale tells of two powerful warriors locked in a deadly battle. Their fight was so ferocious, the surrounding waters turned red with blood. This angered a powerful Jinn dwelling beneath the waves. The Jinn created a whirlpool, attempting to drown the warriors, but their battle raged on. In a final act, the Jinn transformed the warriors into the two islands. The larger warrior became Pulau Hantu Besar, “Big Ghost Island.” The smaller became Pulau Hantu Kechil, “Little Ghost Island.” Their spirits, forever intertwined, continue to reside within these sandy shores. Today, Pulau Hantu Besar and Pulau Hantu Kechil are far from ghostly. They are havens for those seeking a tranquil escape. Snorkelers and divers explore vibrant coral reefs, teeming with life. Campers pitch tents under swaying palms. Swimmers bask in the sheltered lagoons of Pulau Hantu Besar. The reefs are surprisingly rich, considering their proximity to Pulau Bukom’s refineries. They boast a variety of hard and soft corals, a haven for clownfish, wrasses, and even the elusive giant clam and seahorse. A small mangrove patch thrives between the islands, adding to the biodiversity. So, as you explore Pulau Hantu Besar, remember the legends. Feel the gentle breeze and the warm sand between your toes. But most importantly, appreciate the natural beauty that flourishes in this unique corner of Singapore. For within these “Ghost Islands,” life, not spirits, truly reigns supreme.
