“The Hill That Way Propelled Skyward”. That’s the literal meaning behind the Māori name Puke-i-Āki-Rangi. Today we explore this fascinating landmark. Commonly known as Point View, Puke-i-Āki-Rangi is a hill in East Tāmaki Heights.

Puke-i-Āki-Rangi stands at 142 metres. It offers stunning views overlooking East Auckland. The hill is the heart of a 29-hectare reserve. This reserve provides a green space for locals and visitors alike.

The area is not only scenic. It’s also ecologically significant. Puke-i-Āki-Rangi is a habitat for the rare New Zealand long-tailed bat. You might also spot native birds here. Keep an eye out for tūī, pīwakawaka, kererū and riroriro. Much of the hill is surrounded by regenerating native forest. This makes it a haven for local wildlife.

The name Puke-i-Āki-Rangi comes from Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki. Another name used by Ngāi Tai is Puke-ariki. This means “Hill of the Chief”. Long ago, this location was a defended pā. During European times it was known as Point View Pa.

The history of Puke-i-Āki-Rangi reflects both Māori heritage and later developments. In 1994, the East Tāmaki Reservoir was built in Point View Reserve. This reservoir provides essential water storage for the growing community. In 2015, the New Zealand Government reached a treaty settlement with Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki. During this settlement, the hill was officially gazetted as Puke-i-Āki-Rangi. This recognized its original Māori name.

Imagine what it was like centuries ago. Māori warriors defended their pā on this very hill. They looked out over the landscape. They protected their people. Now, think about the changes this land has seen. From a strategic pā to a modern reservoir.

When you visit Puke-i-Āki-Rangi take a moment to appreciate its layers of history. Think about the Māori who named it. Think about the battles fought here. Appreciate the natural environment. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. Puke-i-Āki-Rangi offers more than just a view. It offers a connection to the past. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our heritage and natural spaces.
