They were the guardians of the Manukau Harbour, their protector, Kaiwhare, watching over the waters. Puhitahi was their stronghold, a place of power in their vast territory. Their lands stretched from Waiuku to the Waitākere Ranges. Imagine the bustling life in Puhitahi. The Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua were not just warriors. They were skilled gardeners, cultivating vast kūmara plantations on the volcanic slopes. They were fishermen, drawing sustenance from the abundant harbour. Puhitahi stands as a silent witness to these struggles, a place where the echoes of the past linger. The iwi’s history continued to unfold with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Te Wairākau, a woman of Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua, bravely added her mark to this historic document, alongside other chiefs. Puhitahi remains a testament to the enduring spirit of the Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua, a place where their story is etched into the very landscape.
