The Puhinui Road Bridge stands near the Puhinui railway station in Papatoetoe. This station is a key hub on Auckland’s rail network. Passenger services on the Eastern Line and Southern Line use this station.
The station is accessed from Puhinui Road. A pedestrian bridge sits at the site of a former level crossing. Puhinui Road itself now crosses on a bridge. That bridge is approximately 120 meters north of the pedestrian bridge. For those heading to Manukau Memorial Gardens, this is your closest public transport link.
South of the station the Eastern and Southern Lines diverge. The Eastern Line heads to the Manukau Branch. The Southern Line continues towards Papakura.
The Puhinui railway station first opened on June 29, 1925. Goods services ceased on May 12, 1958. The original name suggestion for the station was Cambria.
Auckland One Rail operates suburban services via Puhinui. These services run to Waitematā, Manukau, Papakura, and Pukekohe. During off-peak weekday hours, there are six trains per hour to Waitematā. Three travel via Glen Innes on the Eastern Line. The other three go via Penrose and Newmarket on the Southern Line. There are also three trains per hour to Manukau and three to Pukekohe. The Puhinui Station has seen significant upgrades. A redeveloped interchange opened on July 24, 2021. Train services resumed on July 26, 2021. The 69 million dollar project includes a new bus/rail interchange. It also features an enhanced station. Buses use Bridge Street to cross the railway line to and from Manukau.
Future plans include a rapid transit overbridge across the railway line. This will provide a direct rapid transit connection. This first stage is estimated to cost 59 million dollars. The line will also pass through Manukau railway station before reaching Botany.
Improvements to Puhinui Road also help. These upgrades provide additional priority lanes between Pukaki Creek Bridge and SH20. This supports a new 10-minute bus service between the airport and Puhinui Station. New intersections at Campana Road and Manukau Memorial Gardens are included. Median barriers and improved lighting enhance safety. Walking and cycling paths add further value.
Auckland Airport also invested in upgrading the Puhinui Road roundabout. This improves the eastern access to the airport from State Highway 20B/Puhinui Road.
Auckland Transport has plans to widen Puhinui Road. The widening will occur between Plunket Avenue and east of the SH20/SH20B Interchange. This provides for a Bus Rapid Transit corridor. It also provides walking and cycling facilities. The Bus Rapid Transit corridor connects to the Puhinui Station concourse. It connects via a new Bus Rapid Transit bridge structure. Walking and cycling facilities will extend along Cambridge Terrace, Bridge Street, and Kenderdine Road.
