Have you ever imagined a town named after a rosary? Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuerteventura, is known for its picturesque harbor and a history rich in stories of pirates, conquest, and resilience. Once called Puerto de Cabras, meaning Goat Harbour, the town was a small goat drinking place. Until 1834, the island’s capital was Betancuria, a town nestled in the heart of Fuerteventura. However, the pirates kept on coming, and the isolated valley where Betancuria was located made it vulnerable to attack. So, the inhabitants of Fuerteventura decided to move their capital to the east coast, a more central and protected location, where Puerto del Rosario was founded in 1860. Today, you can see the Fuente de la Explanada, a fountain, and a historic limestone furnace, called Horno de Cal, that tell the story of the town’s transformation. The town’s name was changed from Puerto de Cabras to Puerto del Rosario in 1956, reflecting its newfound identity as a thriving center of trade and culture on the island.
