“Culhua,” meaning “place of the culhuas,” whispers tales of ancient origins right here in Pueblo Culhuacán. This area was once a major pre-Hispanic city. It stands as a testament to Mexico City’s rich and layered past. Founded around 600 CE, Pueblo Culhuacán boasts continuous occupation. Imagine the centuries of stories woven into its very soil.

The Aztecs, who arrived much later, deeply respected Culhuacán. They saw it as a place of cultural significance. Early Aztec rulers even married into Culhua nobility. They did it to legitimize their power.

After the Spanish conquest, Pueblo Culhuacán transformed again. The Franciscans and later the Augustinians established it as a major evangelization center. The impressive monastery complex that you see stands as a legacy of their influence. Augustinians built this monastery. It remains to this day.

This monastery was dedicated to John the Apostle. It became a center of learning and religion for the area. It closed in 1756. Today, the monastery is a museum. It showcases the area’s pre-Hispanic and colonial history.

Pueblo Culhuacán’s story extends beyond the monastery walls. What is now Avenida Tláhuac used to be a canal. Flat-bottomed canoes transported goods to the city. In the mid-20th century, the canal was paved over.

Today, Pueblo Culhuacán is fully integrated into Mexico City. It has modern structures. Yet it maintains a distinct identity. It was even designated a “Barrio Mágico” in 2011.

Interestingly, a friendly rivalry exists between residents of Pueblo Culhuacán and those of Iztapalapa. Both host passion plays during Holy Week. Each has a pilgrimage site with an image of the buried Christ.

The pre-Hispanic city was almost completely destroyed. Almost nothing remains of it today. The temple at the Cerro de la Estrella is an exception. This site became central to the Aztec’s 52-year renewal ceremony.

The residents here maintain a connection to their roots. They remember the past. They celebrate their traditions. They are proud of their unique heritage.

The name Culhuacán itself speaks volumes. The Mexica considered it an ancient religious place. They believed it connected them to the cultural past.

Step back in time as you explore Pueblo Culhuacán. It played a significant role in shaping the Valley of Mexico. Its influence spanned three centuries. This was between the fall of Tula and the rise of Tenochtitlan. Pueblo Culhuacán became a refuge for Tula’s ruling class. It remained powerful until Tenochtitlan rose in the 15th century.

Consider visiting the Parque Histórico. It protects pre-Hispanic ruins. It also preserves a colonial-era dock and reservoir. This park was once a vital spot for Pueblo Culhuacán. It now serves as a recreational area.

Pueblo Culhuacán was also home to New Spain’s first paper mill. Constructed in 1580, its remains are now in an enclosed plaza. This hidden gem reminds us of the area’s innovative past.

From its pre-Hispanic roots to its colonial transformations and modern integration, Pueblo Culhuacán embodies resilience. It embraces a rich cultural heritage. Take a moment to appreciate the stories etched into the streets.
