Did the Shanghai skyline always have such a tranquil counterpoint? Here before us stands the Pudong Mosque, a serene oasis amidst the city’s energetic hum. The Pudong Mosque isn’t just a beautiful building. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Shanghai’s Muslim community. The original Pudong Mosque opened its doors in 1935 on Wujiating, Pudong Avenue. It was a much smaller structure than what we see today.

The community quickly outgrew the original mosque, leading to an expansion in 1984. But the story doesn’t end there. The Pudong Mosque was reborn in 1995 at its current location on Yuanshen Road. The Pudong District government provided crucial support and funding for this new chapter in the mosque’s history. Now, imagine a space covering over 1,650 square meters. A courtyard welcomes worshippers, leading them to the prayer hall, the imam’s room, and the ablution room. Administrative offices are also housed within the complex.

The architecture of the Pudong Mosque is a striking blend of Arabic influences and modern design. The light-colored exterior walls contrast beautifully with the vibrant green dome. Notice the intricate details of the three-story main building, a testament to Arabic architectural styles. The crowning glory is the 40-meter-high minaret, a beacon of faith reaching towards the heavens. Three smaller domes complement the main dome.

Inside, the main prayer room can accommodate up to 500 worshippers. An additional prayer room at the back can hold another 300 people during Friday prayers. A separate prayer area is dedicated for 50 female worshippers. The Pudong Mosque isn’t simply a place of worship. It is also a community hub. You can find a shop selling books, religious items, and even food. This reflects the mosque’s role as a center for both spiritual and social life.

The Pudong Mosque is conveniently located near public transportation. It is a short walk north from the Yuanshen Stadium Station of the Shanghai Metro. As you leave the Pudong Mosque, remember its journey through time. From humble beginnings to its grand present form, the Pudong Mosque tells a powerful story of faith, community, and resilience. It is a must-see for anyone who wishes to understand Shanghai’s rich and diverse cultural tapestry.
