In the heart of Bavaria, nestled between Munich’s vibrant energy and the serene Dachauer Moos, lies Puchheim. Puchheim’s story begins long before Munich’s, stretching back over a thousand years. The name, meaning “house in the beech forest,” first appeared around 948/57. Imagine Puchheim then, a small settlement amidst a vast expanse of beech trees. Today, Puchheim is a thriving city, divided into two distinct parts. Puchheim-Ort retains the charm of its rural origins, a testament to its long history. Puchheim-Bahnhof, on the other hand, embodies the spirit of progress, born from the arrival of the Munich S-Bahn. This newer section holds a fascinating past. It was once the site of one of Bavaria’s first civilian airfields. During World War I, this airfield was transformed into a prisoner of war camp. The very land where houses now stand was once drained by POWs, preparing it for future development. Puchheim’s growth continued through the 20th century. A “garbage factory,” one of the earliest waste separation plants in the world, operated here from 1898 to 1949. It processed up to 100 wagons of Munich’s garbage daily. Just north of the train station, another marvel emerged in 1910: one of Germany’s first airfields. This airfield hosted spectacular air shows, attracting international aviation pioneers. Yet, this same space also housed a POW camp during World War I, holding over 24,000 French and Russian prisoners. After the war, the former camp became a new home for displaced people from the East. Puchheim experienced a population boom in the 1970s and 80s, growing from 6,400 to 17,600 inhabitants in just a decade. This growth eventually led to Puchheim’s official designation as a city in 2011. Today, Puchheim stands as a testament to its resilient past. It is a city that seamlessly blends its rich history with modern amenities, offering its residents the best of both worlds. Puchheim’s story is a reminder of the constant evolution of places and the enduring spirit of communities.
