Was the construction of Proviso West High School really worth nearly $7.5 million? In 1958, that was a hefty sum! Standing here, in front of this sprawling institution, you might be surprised to learn that this wasn’t always the view. Before Proviso West opened its doors, all high school students in the district attended what is now known as Proviso East High School. However, with a booming student population, a new school became a necessity. That’s how Proviso West High School, a beacon of education for over six decades, came to be. The architects, Perkins and Will, envisioned a grand space for learning, complete with two three-story academic wings, a library, and administrative offices. They even planned for a spacious gymnasium, initially designed with balcony seating and a swimming pool. Interestingly, the designs underwent significant changes during construction. What began as a space for 2,500 students was expanded to accommodate up to 4,000. The grand spectator gym was replaced with four smaller gyms, and special attention was given to designing areas like the cafeteria and auditorium for future expansion. Proviso West High School is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where countless students have walked the halls, pursuing their academic dreams and discovering their passions. This school is a testament to the community’s commitment to education, a legacy that continues to shape young minds today.
