Established in 1865, mere months after the liberation of slaves in Texas, Providence Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the African American community. Picture this: a group of former slaves, fresh from the shackles of forced labor, yearning for a spiritual home. They gathered, not in grand halls, but on the Updack property, a testament to their humble beginnings. The church was rebuilt four times, a symbol of their unyielding spirit. Their first sanctuary, a simple wooden structure, was erected near the current cemetery.
