A hushed reverence hangs in the air. We stand before the Promenade Geneviève de Gaulle-Anthonioz. This isn’t just a street. It’s a testament. A quiet tribute to an extraordinary woman. Geneviève de Gaulle-Anthonioz niece of General Charles de Gaulle lived a life of unwavering courage. Her legacy echoes here.

Geneviève’s story began in 1920 in Saint-Jean-de-Valériscle. A seemingly ordinary childhood was anything but. Her mother’s death at a young age left a deep mark. Her upbringing in the Saar region under French administration gave her a unique perspective on the rise of Nazism. She learned German becoming practically bilingual. Her father even made her read Mein Kampf.

This early exposure to the dangerous ideology fueled her resistance during the Occupation. As a student in Rennes she defied the Nazi regime. She tore down German posters. She created and distributed Lorraine crosses. She even snatched a Nazi flag from the Vilaine bridge. This bold action was just the beginning.

With fellow students she printed and distributed anti-Nazi leaflets. She worked for the Musée de l’Homme network gathering intelligence and information. Later she joined the Défense de la France network. She even wrote articles for their underground newspaper. She signed them “Gallia”. Her bravery was remarkable. She never wavered.

Geneviève’s activities didn’t go unnoticed. Betrayed she was arrested. The Gestapo a ruthless force captured her. She was imprisoned at Fresnes then sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Her ordeal there was brutal and harrowing. The conditions were horrific beyond imagining.

Held prisoner she showed incredible resilience. She found strength in the support of her fellow prisoners. A unique turning point came when Heinrich Himmler kept her alive. He wanted to use her as a bargaining chip. She was held in secret in southern Germany.

Eventually she was released thanks to the International Red Cross. Her journey to freedom was a long and arduous trek through war-torn Germany. Finally she reached Geneva where her father worked as a consul. She found safety. Her ordeal was over.

After the war Geneviève dedicated herself to fighting poverty and injustice. She became president of the French branch of ATD Quart Monde a movement dedicated to eradicating poverty. She worked tirelessly advocating for the marginalized and the disenfranchised. She fought for social justice.

Her work earned her numerous accolades including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. In 1988 she served on the Economic Social and Environmental Council. She passionately fought for legislation addressing poverty. Her unwavering commitment was a testament to her strength.

Geneviève’s legacy continues to inspire. The Promenade Geneviève de Gaulle-Anthonioz serves as a lasting reminder. It is a symbol of her courage her resilience her dedication. This is a place to reflect on a life well lived a life devoted to others. It’s a quiet but powerful tribute.
