“Lost in thought?” a voice startled me, snapping me back to the present. We stood on Promenade François Mitterrand, and I suddenly realized how apt the name was. This walkway, approximately 700 meters long and 22 meters wide, seemed to encourage contemplation. Promenade François Mitterrand stretches along the Seine in Paris’s 1st arrondissement. It’s a relatively new name, bestowed upon this stretch in 2003. Before that, it was simply parts of Quai des Tuileries and Quai du Louvre. The renaming honors François Mitterrand, the French president from 1981 to 1995, whose legacy includes grand architectural projects that reshaped Paris. Promenade François Mitterrand is located between Avenue du Général-Lemonnier and Rue de l’Amiral-de-Coligny. This puts it right at the foot of the Louvre Palace, overlooking the Port du Louvre. Vehicles flow along the promenade in a single direction, west to east, as if following the course of the Seine itself. As we walked, we passed under three historic bridges: Pont Royal, Pont du Carrousel, and Pont des Arts. Each bridge holds its own story, but here on Promenade François Mitterrand, we’re reminded of the constant flow of time and change, much like the river beside us. Promenade François Mitterrand even has a small cameo in French cinema. It’s featured in a scene towards the end of the 1989 film *Un monde sans pitié*. Back then, the promenade still carried the name Quai du Louvre. In the film, a character named Hippo is pulled over by the police for driving a stolen car. It’s a fleeting moment on film but a reminder that even the most ordinary locations can be imbued with narrative.
