How about stepping into a place where faith meets action? That’s the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. This church is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant community hub with a rich history.

Progressive Missionary Baptist Church started humbly. It began 75 years ago in 1943. Reverend Frank McCall founded it at 13101 S. Greenwood in Chicago. Back then, the church had about 25 members. It stood across from the Altgeld Gardens housing development.

In 1945, Reverend A. L. Wilson took over as Pastor. The church grew. By 1952, Reverend Emmanuel Hoskins led the church. The Lord continued to bless Progressive. In 1955, Reverend O.C. Nicks became the guide. Membership increased. They moved to the Children’s Building of Altgeld Gardens. This allowed for more space.

Progressive prayed. The church persevered. In 1961, Reverend Dr. John D. Digby, Jr. became the new shepherd. On October 5, 1965, they marched to a new home. It was located at 735 E. 134th Street. Today, that street bears his name: Reverend John D. Digby, Jr. Drive. Dr. Digby had big dreams for the Lord. On October 3, 1998, they broke ground for a new building.

Finally, on June 15, 2003, Progressive moved to its current location. It is at 26 E. 127th Street in Chicago. Here, they continue to praise God.

On November 8, 2015, Reverend Warren Woods, Jr. became the new Pastor. This was 20 months after Dr. Digby passed. Reverend Woods also led the New Start Missionary Baptist Church. He brought many members of New Start to Progressive. This significantly increased membership. It strengthened the church’s legacy.

Progressive Missionary Baptist Church isn’t just about its past. It’s about its present and future too. The church has a clear mission. It lifts up the name of Jesus. It shares His name through worship and work. Their vision is to show Christ’s compassion. This extends to the congregation and the broader community. They aim to reach Chicago and beyond.

When you visit Progressive, expect a warm welcome. The services blend praise, prayer, and preaching. You might even see liturgical dance. The Mass Choir often performs a powerful song. Youth Ministry members may serve you. The message is always delivered with love. The goal is for you to leave feeling changed.

Progressive’s slogan is simple: “We are pressing and progressing!” Their mission is to share the Gospel with an ever-changing world. It is connecting people to Jesus. It is also connecting people to each other.

You can join them for Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. Sunday Worship starts at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday Prayer is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Worship follows at 7:00 p.m.
