Is it possible for a church to physically move? Usually, that’s a metaphorical question, but not here at the Progressive Baptist Church! The Progressive Baptist Church has a history as dynamic as the city it calls home. Founded in 1918 on South Dearborn Street, the church we see today almost ended up in a very different location. The congregation, initially just five members strong, grew under the leadership of Rev. Thomas Emerson Brown. Rev. Brown, a man of action, oversaw the establishment of numerous church programs and ministries. The year 1958 marked a pivotal moment for the Progressive Baptist Church. As the city of Chicago began plans for a new expressway, the church’s new building on South LaSalle Street found itself directly in the path of progress. Instead of accepting defeat, Rev. Brown took a bold step. He met with Mayor Richard J. Daley himself, ultimately convincing the city to move the church building to its present location. Yes, you heard that right! The entire 1,500-ton structure was relocated, marking the largest building move in Chicago’s history. The city shouldered the entire cost. This incredible feat stands as a testament to the Progressive Baptist Church’s enduring spirit and its place within the fabric of Chicago.
