A ghost of shoppers lingers. Profilo AVM. That’s what it was called. This spot in Mecidiyekoy Istanbul. For years it stood a vibrant hub. A bustling shopping center. But its story is not just about shopping. It’s a tale of ambition and decline a testament to the ever-shifting sands of commerce.
Opened in 1998 Profilo AVM was a landmark. It boasted a massive 75000 square meters of space. Initially. Later it expanded to 117000 square meters. It was one of the largest malls in European Istanbul. Think of it. 209 shops. Seven gyms! A bowling alley. Even a theater. A free parking lot. An enormous indoor swimming pool. It was a world unto itself a city within a city.
Architects Utarit Izgi Belde Batum Aysel and Bahar Gucgucener designed this behemoth. They crafted more than just a mall. They created a destination. Profilo AVM won awards. In 1999 the Shopping Centers and Retailers Association called it a special project. The following years brought acclaim as well. It won awards for customer-friendly gold quality and size.
But time marches on. New malls opened. They drew crowds away from Profilo AVM. The once-thriving business struggled. Debt mounted. Profilo AVM changed hands. First sold to Is Bankasi then to Is Gayrimenkul Yatirim Ortakligi in 2021.
The shops began to close. The services dwindled. Finally Profilo AVM closed its doors for good. Its demolition began in 2024. Now only the memory remains. The memory of a place that once buzzed with life and activity a testament to Istanbul’s ever-changing landscape. A reminder that even the grandest structures eventually yield to time’s relentless tide. This empty lot however is not the end of a story. It’s a turning of a page. A new chapter is about to begin. Luxury residences will rise on this site. The ghosts of shoppers will make way for the dreams of new residents. The Profilo AVM is gone. But its legacy lives on. In the memories of those who shopped. In the stories we tell. And in the promise of a new future built on its foundations.
