The story of the Private Sternwarte begins much earlier. In 1560 Landgrave Wilhelm IV established the first observatory in Central Europe. It was located in Kassel’s Stadtschloss. Imagine two balconies overlooking the city. Equipped with instruments for celestial observation. This first observatory was tragically destroyed. A great fire engulfed the Stadtschloss in 1811. Fortunately many instruments survived. They were moved to the Orangerie.
The current Private Sternwarte is a phoenix. Rising from the ashes of its predecessor. It’s a result of the merger of the Sternwarte Calden and the Schülerforschungszentrum Nordhessen in 2011. Astronomical equipment was carefully transported. New instruments and accessories were added. They enhanced the observatory’s capabilities.

The observatory boasts impressive instruments. A 300/1600-mm Newton reflector. A 200/3000-mm Schaer refractor. A 356/3910-mm Celestron Edge HD-1400. These are complemented by others on the roof terrace. Accessories include a spectrometer photometer and various cameras. This allows a wide range of astronomical observations and research.
