Did you ever imagine a sports center glowing like a crystal at night? Here at Prismen, that’s exactly what happens. Prismen, meaning “The Crystal” in Danish, isn’t your average sports facility. Opened in 2006 in the Holmbladsgade neighborhood of Amager, Prismen was designed by Dorte Mandrup. It was part of a larger urban renewal project, bringing much-needed sports and cultural facilities to the area. The building’s unique angled form and translucent polycarbonate skin make it a standout. These panels allow daylight to flood the interior during the day. At night, they transform Prismen into a luminous beacon, its light a testament to the activities within. Inside, Prismen boasts a large main venue for sports like handball, a dance studio, and a hall for various cultural events. Four smaller rooms offer space for more intimate gatherings. There’s even an organic café to fuel up after a workout or before a show. Imagine attending a concert in a space bathed in soft green light. Prismen’s unique interior, described as a “green indoor landscape,” creates an unusual and dynamic environment. Picture yourself on the main floor, looking up at the multi-functional plateaus rising above. These platforms offer space for activities like tai chi and yoga, adding another dimension to the center’s offerings. The large, transparent roof stretches like a webbed foot between Prismen and the neighboring residential building. This distinctive feature not only illuminates the interior but also allows passersby to glimpse the shadows of the activities within, further connecting Prismen with the community. Prismen truly is more than just a sports center. It’s a vibrant hub for the community, a glowing crystal enriching the neighborhood with its unique blend of sports, culture, and architectural brilliance.
